The More The Merrier Music Group
The music group is run and organised by Mary Marker, who is a retired schoolteacher living in Chudleigh. She learnt piano as a child, which unknown to her at the time, was to be the start of a lifetime’s appreciation of folk music for dancing.
Mary grew up in Wedmore, Somerset, and married Colin in 1968. Colin’s work meant they moved around the country several times, living in Dorset, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire and Kent, before finally coming to rest in Devon. Wherever they went, there seemed to be a folk club near-by, which fuelled their keen interest in folk dancing and music. She joined and played in many folk music groups, eventually picking up the accordion in 1978, and has not looked back since.
Her love of dancing means she also has a wide repertoire of music she can play. Versatile in English, American, Irish and Scottish, it reflects a colourful life spent in the folk dancing fraternity. She is associated with Irish dancing in Kingsteignton, the Scottish Caledonian in Exeter, as well as the Willand Folk Dance Club. She also runs her own band Petronella, which is available for dances, parties or weddings, etc
The More The Merrier music group provides an opportunity for anyone who would like to meet socially for the purpose of playing music for dancing. They meet on the first and third Thursdays of each month in the Methodist Church rooms, Gables Road, Willand, at 7:30pm. Open to absolute beginners as well as those already playing, the evenings are structured to give everyone a chance to play to their own level.
The real advantage the group has is that the Willand Folk Dance Club invites the music group to club evenings from time to time, so that they can experience playing for dancing and working with different callers. Being in a music group will also give an opportunity to meet other like minded people to form friendships, and for those ambitious and hard working, a chance to one day form a band of their own.
